Bronx Wentz? Seriously?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

So the eagerly anticipated progeny of Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz has arrived, and wouldn’t you know it, so has another only-in-Hollywood name: Bronx Mowgli Wentz. While not as head scratching as Pilot Inspektor Lee, Moxie Crimefighter Jillette or Audio Science Clayton, it does make us long for a simpler time when every man, woman and child was named Fred. Oh, what a time that was.

For your consideration: a guitar boat. The song asks, “Does it make you happy?” Yes, it makes us happy.

Investment advice? Talk to Fred.

Obama ‘08 by Lance WymanAt a time when few investments seem sounder than the hole in your mattress, there’s one property that is sure to reap dividends down the road: a limited edition Obama 08 poster by one of America’s most prolific and influential designers, Lance Wyman. Only 5,000 of these beauties were printed and you can get your Obama-loving hands on one for only $40.  Considering Barack Obama’s election will endure as one of the most ground-breaking events in the history of our nation, $40 seems like a steal. How much will this poster go for in 4 years? 40 years? Who knows. But while you wait for your investment benefits to accrue, you’ll at least have something vibrant and dynamic to hang on your wall.

**UPDATE - the posters are now sold out. Hello, Ebay!**

Elected! Free!

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Congratulations to America! We voted in record numbers and made history. So now let’s enjoy a free Cheeseburger. We refer not to the quintessentially American meal of bovine and bread, but to the beloved Brooklyn trash-rock band Cheeseburger which just released a cover of Alice Cooper’s “Elected” free for the downloading masses. Get it here on Flavorwire and get yer party on.

Joe the Former Republican Congressman Turned Political Roundtable Host

Mika and Joe throw down.

Sure, his McCainian moniker doesn’t quite roll off the tongue like “Joe the Plumber”, but that doesn’t mean the man should go unnoticed for his handiwork. Joe Scarborough captains the best political show on television, which is no small accomplishment when nearly every program seems to feature media pundits spouting off about Election 08. No one can touch the crew put together by MSNBC to compliment the endearingly square Joe Scarborough, which features Willie Geist and the beguiling Mika Brzezinski, as well as NBC head politico Chuck “Chuckie T” Todd, Mike Barnicle, Pat Buchanan and Erin Burnett. You may recall Mika as the news anchor who refused to read a breaking story on Paris Hilton last year, starting a worldwide boycott on all news P-Hilty. If you missed it the first time around, watch the clip, then grab some fresh “Joe” every weekday morning, if not for the politics then for the pop culture, eye candy and irresistible banter.

Nothing Is Precious Enough For Us

Trying to explain Death Vessel in a blog post would be like trying to draw an accurate map of Brooklyn on a post-it note. With a sharpie. Can’t be done. So lets just move on to the part where we would say, “never mind these bollocks, just get the new record and you’ll understand.” Nothing Is Precious Enough For Us was released on Sub Pop last Tuesday, find it at Other Music today, see him on tour throughout September.

Sigur Ros rocks the Balzac

Sigur Ros @ MoMA

On Iceland’s independence day, Sigur Ros chose to be in NYC to celebrate Olafur Eliasson’s P.S.1 show by performing in the MoMA atrium and hanging out with Fred. On stage with the band was none other than Honoré de Balzac, preserved for posterity by the great Auguste Rodin. Why is a monument to a French writer by a French sculptor on stage with an Icelandic band celebrating a Danish-Icelandic artist? That will remain one of life’s great mysteries. Here’s another great mystery: if silk-screen artist Shepard Fairey (of Obey Giant fame) and Sigur Ros singer Jónsi Birgisson were standing in the same room, could anyone tell them apart?

Fred in Asia, part 1Fred in Asia, part 2

Where on Earth has Fred been recently? Why no FredSpot updates? Well folks, Fred has been in Asia clearing his mind and learning the wisdom of the ancients. And while he was gone the rest of us just watched American Idol and caught up on some sleep. But now that Fred is back from his spiritual journey, he’s ready to kick out the jams all summer long. Which means FredSpot is back in action, baby! But before we get started, lets share a moment of zen with these photos of Fred coolin’ out with some truly monumental figures, courtesy of his guide to the Far East, FOF Rachel O.

Heavy Metal Fred

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Pimp my FredArtist and Friend of Fred, Dan C. puts the screws to our buddy Fred in a sculptural piece for the opening show at the Lisa Coscino Gallery in Pacific Grove, CA. The stunning object, titled D.I.Y. Pimp my Fred, is no doubt the heaviest Fred we’ve ever seen. The kind of heavy that inspires the “long live metal” extended thumb, forefinger & pinky hand motion and makes us want to shout at the devil and/or bark at the moon. Pimpin’ may not be easy, but it sure is fun to look at. Dan Cronin, you rock.
